When college football coaches are fired, they often walk away with millions. Buyouts act as insurance for taking one of the riskiest jobs in sports, but they also create costly incentives for universities.
Thankfully, there's only one website where people can anonymously complain about how awful I am at my job. I would need that extra money to be in a position where there are dozens of outlets regularly complaining about me. My ego is much too fragile for that type of job.
Good overview, one thing to also mention is the idea of enrollment. The University of Alabama saw significant enrollment increases after they hired Nick Saban and they were also able to see increased enrollment with tuition increases. A good coach (great in Saban's case), can be excellent for the whole university.
Frank Beamer did the same thing for Virginia Tech from the mid-90s through the end of his tenure. Except he was making < $135,000/yr through 2000. Source (NYT, 1 Sep 1994). Coach Beamer was a better investment measured by university applicant per head coach salary dollar :-)
And I think he decided on Enter Sandman, right? I am heading to the Cal game with my CVCC crew in a few weeks. I look forward to seeing this in person.
It was a good game, the second game this year in Virginia that I went to that went into overtime after seeing my Noles not win in Charlottesville. This game was much colder, but the atmosphere was awesome!
I have a paper in the pipeline that is in a similar vein, but we're finding that the gains from college football investments are unique to the institution.
The new Chad Powers series on Hulu illustrates this well!
Brent Pry will make more this year than I have in my entire career put together. I'm still trying to wrap my head around the risk calculation...

Hope you enjoyed the game...cold but exciting!

I'm jealous! I'll be on a bus back from Richmond with our first year students.

I dream of a world where college professors are paid more than college football coaches
You and me both, friend!
