There was an interesting Planet Money episode about electronic tags, and the big takeaway was that they only increased prices when the store was closed so people wouldn't get mad while shopping.
I'll have to look up that episode. Of course, the first thing most people say when you mention "electronic tags" is "surge pricing!", but the first thing I thought was "fewer employees".
I doubt we'll see significant less employment. Big stores like Walmart and Target struggle to get stuff out on shelves and I think we'll see this resolve some of that issue as those employees can move to focus on getting the store presentable again.
Will electronic price tags (and QR code menus) mean an end to menu costs? I am definitely adding this to my inflation notes. Great stuff as always!
