Great post. My issue with the pre check fee is that given it saves society costs (and directly saves TSA costs), the government should be offering it for free (or even pay you to get it). The fee (like any fee) acts intentionally to dissuade you from getting it, even though benefits here are clear for all parties involved.

That is a really interesting perspective that I hadn't considered before. TSA PreCheck is considered one of the more unfair aspects of travel, right before paying for access to skip the line at the check-in counter.

"Pay us a fee and we'll trample your rights just a little bit less" is a lot like the middle school bully taking your lunch money in exchange for only throwing you against the lockers but omitting the swirlie

The chart, "Americans no longer believe rules on laptops, liquids, and shoes are very effective airport security measures" points to an interesting dichotomy. During the pandemic, ~50% of Americans believed masks were ineffective. 50% of Americans believed immunizations were ineffective (20% believed they contained Bill Gates' microchips*).

Just because Americans believe that rules on laptops, liquids, and shoes are effective airport security measures, doesn't make it true. There are experts across the federal government who are watching these plots, testing threat technology, and synthesizing intelligence to understand the risk to the American public.

Let's try to rebuild a society where we rely on expertise, rather than what Tik Tok told me to believe...

I never got precheck because of the up front cost in time. For how little i fly internationally it's not worth it and for domestic flights i always fly extraordinarily early.

Thats not to say it is not worth it as a while in fact i plan on getting it soon. The application process could use some improvements. Im glad technology is allowing more ease of transit though.

I think you may be mixing Global Entry with PreCheck. I'm not sure how the process has changed, but I just had to visit a Staples for a 15-minute appointment to complete PreCheck. I can imagine Global Entry requires more, but PreCheck was surprisingly easy.

Also worth pointing out that US* happily tolerates 1000 Covid deaths (three planeloads worth) a week, rather than maintain even basic precautions. If a 10 second check were required of everyone going into a shopping mall, there would be outrage.

"It’s probably not too surprising that Americans were starting to question how effective the policy truly was." I don't think it was economic analysis that gave them doubts ... https://www.heritage.org/transportation/commentary/heres-how-bad-the-tsa-failing-airport-security-its-time-privatization

If you think TSA checkpoints are wasteful, wait until you find out about school zones!
