Today’s the big day! The house is being packed up and I’ll soon make the journey down to Blacksburg, Virginia. Last month I accepted a job at Virginia Tech as a Collegiate Associate Professor of Economics, and I’ll also take on an administrative role as their Director of Undergraduate Programs. I’ve been with Penn State for the past 8 years, but I essentially hit the top of what I could really achieve here.
I’ve met some amazing students, worked with outstanding colleagues, and grown personally and professionally more than I could have initially imagined. I’ve gotten to take students on a study abroad trip and watched a handful of close students go on to graduate schools. While I don’t know each of the 8,369 students I’ve taught at Penn State, there are hundreds who have had a memorable impact on me. Those are just a few of the reasons it made it hard to start looking for a new position, but the pandemic really pushed me toward considering something new.
I don’t have a newsletter prepared for today because I’ve been saying my goodbyes around town and furiously packing and cleaning before the movers arrive. I still have stories to share with you tomorrow, but for today consider it a “no news” day. I’ll make it up to you all soon.
Congratulations, safe travels and welcome to VA. Tech is getting a great professor, and since you’re closer I can pick your brain easier!
