Haidt really has an axe to grind about social media. From looking into the actual research it didn’t support his views nearly as much as he implies.
I still don’t think we should be using social media so much (though doesn’t that include substack? 🤔), I just don’t see it as the biggest problem to focus on. I think banning phones in school would already get most of the benefit (even there the evidence is mixed, but it seems at worst a “harmless” intervention).
I will definitely be checking the anxious generation. I feel bad for younger people the rhetoric around them is prescribed and it seems that very few older people actually stop and ask hey what do you need?
It's definitely had me thinking about how I handle things in class. There was such a big push a decade ago to do more things on mobile devices in the classroom, and the book led me to question whether that's the right thing.
I myself have become more of a tech hermit. I plan on actively reigning im my tech use more for now on. It isn't high now but it is higher than I want. I got a phone notification the other day that read "you used your phone 2 hours less last week." I was like damn right I did
My phone largely lives on DND, and it's one of the things I'm most proud of. When I got a smart watch, the first thing I looked into was figuring out how to turn off all the notifications.
The appreciation is mutual. Always happy when MME graces my inbox. The Tuesday links are also a source of great interest to me. (Is there a reason they're capped at five?)
Purely inertia. I think the first one started as a list of five things I also found interesting from last week. I never thought to change it after that.
Great post, really enjoyed reading as many of your posts as I could. Hard to keep up, so much great content. I read most of those books too, will add the others to my seemingly never ending to read list. BIG GIANT HINT: Hope to collaborate with you this year. Happy New Year!
May you have a safe, healthy, productive, gainful year to come. I hope this year everyone on earth achieves their benevolent goals. I also hope suffering and war decline more than the purchase power of their currency.
My favorite thing about the MME is that the email with meat shows up on Tuesday in my inbox. I guess it's because I am a freeloader but it's pretty cool and always, always makes me smile.
I love this! Thank you, David! Those Tuesday links are usually the topics that I didn't get a chance to write about, but had considered writing about. It's good to know those are of value to people!
Great year! Congrats on a successful run and consistent high-quality content. Thanks for helping us learn more this year.
Thanks, Dr. A! Here's to many good years for both of us 🍻

I'm a big supporter of banning phones in the classrooms, so you won't hear too many arguments from me on that one.

Let's plan on it! I'd love to have you on the Econ Happy Hour podcast to talk about teaching as well. I'm sure we can plan something for JET SET.
